It may be blowing a bitter wind along New Road in Brighton, but La Gigo Gi exudes southern Italian warmth. While the cacti and orchids in the window are plastic, there's nothing fake about the friendly service and fine food.
Established three years ago by the gregarious Giovanni, who hails from Montescaglio in the province of Matera, the cosy cafe features Pizza Focaccia (£1.95), Rigatoni Spinach, Basil and Ricotta Cream Sauce (£3.95) and Penne Meatballs (£3.95) among other Italianate snacks. The home-made minestrone(£3.70 with ciabatta) will warm the cockles of your heart on a chilly day. Caffeine addicts can get their fix of Espresso (£1.40) or Latte (£1.95) while tea drinkers are not forgotten (£1.45).
The cafe is within easy walking distance of the Theatre Royal, the Dome, and the Pavilion, not to mention the myriad funky bars and shops in the Laines.
In the afternoon, when Giovanni's daughter Louella takes charge of operations, the sounds of Mediterranean crooners are replaced by trip-hop, trance and ambient music. Whichever takes your fancy, Le Gigo Gi is a fine place to find surcease in a busy day.
